Traditional use of kratom, Mitragyna speciosa, is typically confined to rural Thailand where it's considered a highly illegal substitute for opium. In many ways its use parallels that of native coca chewers in South America. Traditionally, lower doses of the powdered extract, mitragynine produce stimulating effects, while at higher doses the effects became very narcotic-like, sedating, and strongly analgesic. Some reseachers believe that Kratom may prove useful as an opiate-free analgesic for managing chronic pain in the future, but much research has yet to be done.
