While we offer Kratom in the the extract form (an amazing 15X powdered extract), many of you have asked for the straight leaf form. We've chosen the "Maeng Da" variety (a genetically-grown Thai kratom) due to its exceptional alkaloid content (active at only 1-2 grams), its pungent fragrance and its nice green color. Oddly enough, its English translation comes out roughly as “pimp-grade kratom”, so it must be good...right?!
Traditional use of Mitragyna speciosa, the kratom plant, was originally limited to rural Thailand where it's considered a highly illegal substitute for opium. In many ways its use parallels that of native coca chewers in South America. Most of the folks who make use of kratom leaves via chewing, smoking or a tea, do so as a way of assuaging the discomforts of a physically arduous daily existence.
Natives say that chewing the leaves will make you feel good and able to work hard. Kratom seems to ease the mind, energize the body and allows a sort of meditative repose under the most grueling physical conditions. Most Westerners who've tried it report feeling a paradoxical mixture of stimulation and profound relaxation.
Habitual Thai opium users employ it as an economical alternative to opium. Tentative research suggests that kratom's activity may be largely due to the indole alkaloid mitragynine. This compound apparently shows an affinity for the brain's opiate receptors and may show promise as a treatment for interrupting opiate dependency. In low doses mitragynine produces stimulating effects while higher levels yield narcotic and sedative effects.
