Khat is the recreational herb of choice in countries of the Arab world and Northeast Africa. From Yemen to Somalia, special khat houses are set up exclusively for the chewing of this glossy leaved, evergreen bush and the consumption of khat tea.
Chewing Khat produces a sense of strong stimulation and euphoria. It fuels the long hours of lively, whirling conversation and laughter exchanged at the khat houses and acts as an important "social lubricant" in areas where consumption of alcohol is frowned upon.
Catha edulis makes an excellent ornamental foliage plant. It is easily grown, and survives a wide range of conditions including extreme heat, frost, drought, sun or shade. An excellent choice for container gardens as well.
