Calamus Root LIQUID Extract - Old World

Click to enlargeThe fragrant roots of this aquatic plant have been used extensively in healing traditions in both the New and Old World. Calamus was widely used among Native American tribes: the Cree chewed the root for its entheogenic and stimulant properties; the Blackfoot mixed the ground root with tobacco to prepare an analgesic smoking blend to treat headaches: the Cheyenne combined it with red willow to make a smoke for sweatlodge rituals; it was also employed to treat sore throats, toothaches, and gastrointenstinal distress.

In the Old World, there is evidence of its early use in Egypt and India as an aphrodisiac. In the ancient healing tradition of Ayurvedic medicine, calamus has been prescribed for thousands of years as a tonic that’s useful in supporting brain function, rejuvenating the nervous system, and calming muscle and intestinal spasms. In Nepal the spicy rhizomes are used as incense called “bojho”.

In reviewing the active components of calamus root, there is a clear difference between Old and New World plants which leads some botanists to classify them as two distinct species. Old World calamus is rich in the volatile oil beta-asarone, but New World plants lack this compound and instead are rich with volatile sesquiterpene compounds. The FDA bans the internal use of calamus preparations containing beta-asarone on the grounds that isolated and concentrated beta-asarone has demonstrated carcinogenic activity in the laboratory. Interestingly Old World calamus has been safely used for over two thousand years in Ayurvedic medicine indicating that perhaps other components in the plant modulate the effects of beta-asarone or that the dosages of beta-asarone used in the FDA trials do not accurately reflect amounts typically encountered in therapuetic situations.

Our fluid extract is made from Old World calamus plants. The species is known as Acorus calamus. We carefully extract only the freshest rhizomes with pure water and grain alcohol to produce a highly concentrated solution standardized to contain the equivalent of 1.2 grams of dried root for each milliliter of extract. For external use only.
